Atiqul Islam / President of the Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industries (CEBAI)

Md. Atiqul Islam is the President of the Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industries (CEBAI). CEBAI is a joint initiative of ILO and BGMEA, supported by H&M and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) aimed to establishing a replicable model of an industry driven training and support services for the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh. He served BGMEA as the President during 2013-2014 and has been actively involved with various activities and initiatives of BGMEA since last 27 years. During his tenure as the President of BGMEA he successfully led the industry to face the hurdles arising from Tazreen Fashion fire and Rana Plaza tragedy and to turnaround. Under his leadership the apparel sector got a new direction toward more compliant factories than before, with improved working condition and harmonious industrial relations.

Mr. Atiq is a dynamic entrepreneur who completed his higher studies with a degree from the University of Dhaka. With dedication and determination, he started his journey in the Bangladesh Garment sector from 1985. After 30 years of hard-work, he has built an empire named Islam Garments Group, with more than 20 business units under this group, employing more than 15 thousand workers, making them financially stable and economically active. World’s renowned retailer ‘Walmart’ has honored Mr. Atiqul Islam with the prestigious award as most successful entrepreneur in consecutive years of 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010.

Mr. Atiq is a Member of the Board of Trustees of BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT). He is the Managing Director of Islam Garments Limited.  The Government of Bangladesh declared him Commercially Important Person (CIP) for several times.
